Water is fluid, patient and reflective

Water is also mischievous, spirited and whimsical

The Centre for Water Research is IISER Pune's interdisciplinary department with the aim to create a knowledge platform about water systems, engage with socially relevant research, as well as influence scholars to look at water through a multi-dimensional lens.

We encounter so many forms of water every day, and thus there was a deliberate attempt to stay away from the conventional imagery of water as river systems, in order to be able to encompass a broader outlook on the resource which births life.

However, some of the earlier iterations became too abstract to create a mental link between the words, the visual and the intended meaning.

The final visual identity uses the abstracted flow of water through interconnected letter forms, but aligns with the conventional colour association of water with blue.

The centre’s name is wound through 2 seemingly disconnected points but embody the idea of water memory and its fluidity, much like water drops. The main blue drop coagulates within the idea of Centre-Water-Research.

Though the identity has a 'status-quo' version, it is designed to allow for a playful character of the dots- with free-form movement and placement- with flexibility given to the user to create their own variation as they see fit.

To respond to the nature of research and water both, the intent was to create a living identity with the possibility of many forms and choices.
